Key Role Overview

The new technicians will be responsible for field-level tasks related to fiber installation, activation, splicing, termination, wireless configuration, customer support, and reporting. These roles are critical in ensuring Afghan Telecom’s services reach more customers with improved speed, quality, and reliability.

1. Installation & Activation Tasks

Technicians will play a frontline role in building and extending Afghan Telecom’s physical and wireless network:

  • Install fiber optic lines from distribution boxes (e.g., FAT) directly to customer locations.

  • Mount and configure ONT/ONU devices based on service type and user equipment.

  • Ensure fiber signals are clean and strong before handing over the service.

  • Install wireless devices such as:

    • Antennas

    • Routers

    • Radios

    • Switches

  • Align wireless equipment precisely using site coordinates and signal tools.

  • Set up Point-to-Point (P2P) and Point-to-Multipoint (P2MP) wireless links as per design documents.

  • Mount equipment securely and ensure proper grounding for all field devices.

2. Fiber Splicing & Cable Termination

Fiber integrity is critical. Technicians will:

  • Perform fusion splicing of fiber cables for permanent, low-loss connections.

  • Terminate fiber ends using appropriate connectors and enclosures.

  • Test and verify each splice using:

    • OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer)

    • Power meters

  • Accurately label all spliced fibers and cores for easy identification.

  • Maintain order and hygiene in all fiber enclosures and junctions.

3. Network Implementation (Wireless)

For wireless deployments, technicians will:

  • Implement links based on technical diagrams and topography.

  • Configure wireless settings:

    • SSIDs

    • Bandwidth limits

    • Channel frequency

    • Security keys and firewalls

  • Adjust antenna angles and transmit power for optimal range and quality.

  • Follow best practices for wireless network expansion and integration.

4. Performance Monitoring & Optimization

Service quality doesn’t end with installation. Technicians will:

  • Continuously monitor:

    • Signal strength

    • Link uptime

    • Bandwidth usage

    • Interference levels

  • Use advanced tools such as:

    • SNMP-based monitoring software

    • Spectrum analyzers

    • Link planners

  • Report anomalies and proactively suggest upgrades or rerouting if necessary.

5. Troubleshooting & On-Site Maintenance

Every technician will also be a problem solver. Key tasks include:

  • Detect and fix issues such as:

    • Weak signals

    • Fiber cuts

    • Connector faults

    • Equipment failure

  • Use diagnostic tools like:

    • OTDR

    • Power meter

    • Cable testers

  • Replace or reconfigure devices that are underperforming.

  • Perform preventive maintenance to avoid future service interruptions.

  • Respond to emergency faults in the field — quickly and efficiently.

6. Technical Documentation & Record Keeping

Every completed task should be properly documented. Technicians will:

  • Record installation details such as:

    • Fiber routes

    • Device MAC/IP addresses

    • Splice points and cabinet locations

  • Maintain clear, daily logs:

    • Work completed

    • Resources used

    • Notes on faults or client feedback

  • Assist in GIS updates and keep physical maps and network records current.

  • Help update inventory databases with newly deployed equipment or replaced assets.

7. Customer-Facing Support

Customer satisfaction is a top priority. Technicians will:

  • Guide customers through their service activation process.

  • Offer brief orientation on using routers, ONTs, and managing bandwidth.

  • Be available during installation visits and troubleshoot any immediate client-side issues.

  • Coordinate with customer service if problems persist.

  • Ensure every service handover is smooth and fully operational.

8. Field Operations & Site Visits

On-field work requires discipline and professionalism. Technicians are expected to:

  • Visit towers, rooftops, poles, and underground ducts as part of routine assignments.

  • Carry out site surveys for new deployments or upgrades.

  • Ensure that safety protocols are followed at all times, especially at height or underground.

  • Use safety gear consistently and report any unsafe conditions or equipment.

9. Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

All technicians must commit to the safety and standards set by Afghan Telecom:

  • Follow safety instructions during:

    • Climbing

    • Electrical exposure

    • Underground work

  • Ensure compliance with international and local telecom installation guidelines.

  • Participate in safety briefings, audits, and drills as required.

10. Internal Coordination & Reporting

Technicians are not working alone. They will regularly communicate with:

  • NOC (Network Operations Center) to resolve backend issues.

  • Help Desk Teams for troubleshooting ongoing user problems.

  • Planning & Engineering Teams for map updates or major deployments.

  • Submit daily task reports and suggest technical improvements when necessary.

Job Requirements

To be eligible for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum Education: 12th-grade high school completion.

  • Preferred: Technical diploma or certification in:

    • Telecommunications

    • Electrical Engineering

    • IT or Networking

  • Experience: At least 1 year of hands-on experience in:

    • Internet setup

    • Fiber cabling

    • Wireless links

    • Router/switch configuration

  • Must have basic knowledge of tools like OTDR, splicing machines, power meters, and Wi-Fi analyzers.

  • Should be physically active and willing to work in the field (including rooftops, poles, towers).

  • Able to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a technical team.
