Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the program they are applying for. The degree must be obtained from a recognized and accredited institution. - For Ph.D. Degree Applicants:
Applicants should possess a research-based Master’s degree in a relevant academic field from an accredited university. Please note that professional or terminal Master’s degrees that are practice-oriented (such as MBAs or MPAs) are not accepted as substitutes for research-based degrees and should be clearly identified as such in the application. - Age Requirement:
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time they begin their studies at KAUST.
- Academic Performance:
- The fellowship is highly competitive, and academic excellence plays a major role in selection.
- A strong GPA is essential:
- Minimum GPA Required: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or an equivalent mark in another grading system).
- Typical Profile of Admitted Students:
- Approximately 90% of successful applicants have a GPA above 3.3.
- Around 75% of admitted students hold a GPA above 3.5.
- English Language Proficiency:
- All applicants must demonstrate strong command of English, as it is the primary language of instruction and research at KAUST. Acceptable test scores include:
- IELTS Academic: Overall score of at least 6.0, with no band below 5.5.
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum total score of 79, with a minimum of 17 in each section. (KAUST’s institutional code is 4107.)
- PTE Academic: Overall score of 62, with no section scoring below 59.
- Cambridge English – Advanced (CAE): Minimum overall score of 176, with at least 169 in each individual skill area.

- Some applicants may be exempt from English proficiency testing if they completed their degree in a country where English is the native language of instruction. However, such exemptions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
