NIMS Internship Program 2026 – Materials Science in Japan
Gain Research Experience at NIMS
The NIMS Internship Program gives undergraduate and graduate students a chance to get hands-on experience in materials science. Students work with top researchers at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan. The program helps students learn practical skills, participate in real research projects, and meet scientists from around the world.
Who Can Apply
- Current undergraduate or graduate students
- Students must be enrolled during the internship period
- Students should be motivated and interested in materials science research
Note: If you have another Japanese government-funded scholarship, check with your provider to confirm eligibility.
Internship Details
- Duration: Up to 90 consecutive days, must finish by March 31, 2027
- Location: NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan
- Financial support:
- Daily allowance
- Accommodation (utilities not included)
- Transportation support for bachelor’s students: one round-trip flight from home country to Japan and one round-trip bus between Tsukuba and the airport

- Contact only one researcher at a time
- Send your application to the researcher
Required documents:- NIMS Internship Application Form (English)
- CV (English)
- Student enrollment/registration certificate (scanned copy, issued within last 3 months)
- Official academic transcripts (undergraduate and graduate if applicable)
- Researcher may also ask for a reference from your supervisor
- Researcher submits to NIMS office
- Only the host researcher can send your documents to the Graduate Program Section, Academic Collaboration Office
- Applications sent directly by students will not be accepted

- Screening results will be shared by mid-March 2026
